How To Deodorize Your Wooden Chopping Board - Naturally No Chemicals

Updated: Apr 7

If you regularly use a wooden chopping board or butchers block, then we're guessing you've started to notice the stink and transfer of onions, and garlic on to your fruits and cake.

Well don't worry, you're not alone. It is a problem that everyone has when using a wooden chopping board. The wood absorbs the scent of everything that's chopped on it, and some of those scents such as, onion and garlic, can be pretty strong. Unfortunately, washing your wooden chopping board with hot soapy water just doesn't shift the smells. It washes it clean for sure, but it does nothing to shift those potent smells.

We have a tried and tested solution, and what's more, it's completely natural and toxin-free, which we absolutely love. We're all for using natural, non-toxin products, especially in our kitchen, and where food is in contact with.

All you're going to need is;

  • Coarse Salt

  • Lime or Lemon

  • Very little Elbow Grease & Very Little Time

STEP 1

Begin by washing your wooden chopping board with hot soapy water, but remember, do not submerge your wooden chopping board in water. Rinse with clean water and thoroughly dry with a tea-towel.

STEP 2

Depending on the size of your wooden chopping board, sprinkle 1 -2 tbsp of coarse salt over your board.

STEP 3

Slice a lemon or lime in half and squeeze the juice all over your salt and leave for 1 minute, so the juice can help dissolve the salt a little.

STEP 4

Using your halved lemon or lime, use the flesh side, and in circular motions rub the salt and juice into your board. Paying particular attention to the area of the board most used. This will take a few minutes. Leave it to work its magic for 15 minutes.

STEP 5

Simply wash off the salt with a cloth under some warm water, and you're done.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I DEODORISE MY WOODEN CHOPPING BOARD?

It really depends on you, the time you have spare, and how often you use your chopping board.

We use ours regularly on a daily basis, and so we tend to do it once every two weeks. However, if you aren't using it too regularly, then once a month should be just fine.

DOES SALT AND LEMON ALSO HELP TO REMOVE STAINS FROM A WOODEN CHOPPING BOARD?

Apart from salt and lemon / lime being a fantastic natural deodorizer on wooden chopping boards, it also helps lift, and remove stains on your wooden chopping board, too. Just follow the same steps above.
