How To Make Porridge / Oatmeal With Milk -the best creamy porridge

Updated: Apr 16

Porridge is a staple in our household, especially for breakfast on a chilly morning. It's comforting and keeps us full until lunchtime. Porridge can be made using water, which I guess is less calories. However, we really do not enjoy porridge made with water, and so we choose to make it using milk. Milk porridge is far more creamy, and in our opinion far more enjoyable.

In the UK oats boiled with water or milk is called, Porridge. However, in the US, it is called Oatmeal.

Technically, porridge is made with a variety of legumes, whole-grains, or oats, whereas oatmeal is made only with a type of oat.

So, how do you make porridge, aka, oatmeal with milk? Let us share how we make our porridge with milk.

Lets Talk Measurements

  • Per 1 cup of oats we use 2 & 1/2 cups of milk (this makes a perfect, non stodgy porridge)

What If I Want To Make Porridge With Water. Are The Ratios Of Liquid To Oats The Same?

  • Yes. Whichever way you perfer to make your porridge, the ratio of liquid to oats remains the same.

  • Per 1 cup of oats, use 2 & 1/2 cups of milk or water.

How To Make Porridge / Oatmeal

  1. Add your measured out oats, and milk, or water to a medium sizes saucepan

  2. Heat on a Medium heat and stir

  3. Heat until the oats have absorbed most of the milk. We like a little liquid in our porridge, otherwise it becomes too thick, and stodgy.

  4. Be sure to stir regularly using a wooden spoon, to prevent burning or sticking to the base of the saucepan.

  5. Once the oats have absorbed most of the liquid, remove from the heat, and serve in a bowl. This can take a good 5 - 10 minutes

  6. Enjoy plain, or you can add some toppings

What Can You Serve With Porridge / Oatmeal?

This really is down to personal preference and diet. Porridge is good served with a huge variety of toppings, but is also fantastic served warm by itself with nust a drizzle of honey.

Here are some of our favourite toppings for our morning porridge;

  • Berries

  • Dollop of Nut Butter

  • Dollop of Jam

  • Honey or Maple Syrup

  • Seeds or Nuts

  • Fresh or Dried Fruits

  • Square of Dark Chocolate

Along with toppings for the porridge we also like to add, cinnamon, or nutmeg, and vanilla extract to our porridge while its cooking. It gives it a lovely flavour burst.
